World Heritage
The Castle District, the River Danube embankments and the whole of Andrássy út were officially recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Castle District is the most significant ancient monument of the country. It gives a complex picture of the city together with the buildings alongside the Danube, the houses, the bridges, the Parliament, the Basilica, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Gresheam Palace. The Andrássy Avenue is the unitary architecture of the end of the 19th century, which ends is the spectacular Millenary Monument at the Heroes' Square.

The Royal Palace
At the Buda side one can see the Castle District. The Royal Palace, the Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion became the symbols of Budapest. It can be reached by foot on the serpentine steps at the side of the castle or from the Adam Clark Square by funicular or by the Castle's bus from Moszkva Square. Its gained final structure under Franz Joseph Kaiser's of Austria at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century. The ornamented halls have been destroyed under World War II. Today the building gives place for the largest library and museums of Hungary.

The Margaret Island
The nicest green spot of the city is the Margaret Island located in the middle of the Danube. Its symbol the water tower, which is a national monument with beautiful surroundings. In the summer there are opera and ballet performances on the island's outdoor stage. Intimate walks can be taken under the age-long trees. The Island can be visited only by bus, by bicycle or by foot. The island has swimming-pools, two hotels and restaurants.

The Houses of Parliament
The construction of the spectacular building of the Parliament began in 1885 and lasted for more than 20 years. The best artist of the age worked on the details of the 17.000m2 large building. From January 2000, the Holy Crown and the Crown Jewellery are protected in the Parliament. The entrance to the building is free for Hungarians and the citizens of the EU. The guided visits from gate X. starts in every half hour and lasts approximately 50 minutes.

ST. Stephen’s Basilica
The largest and one of the nicest churches in Budapest, which has a cupola that can be seen from every point of the city. The construction started in 1851 and took 54 years. The Basilica was built in Neo-Classical style. Inside there is the Hungarians' most revered relic: the "Holy Right Hand" (the mummified right hand of Hungary's first monarch called St. Stephen), which is followed by every Monday's Easter procession through the streets of the city. The Basilica can be visited for free, but visitors have to pay an allowance if they want to visit the grandiose cupola which offers a good view of the city.

The Synagogue of Dohány Street
Designed by a wiener architect Ludwig Förster, in Byzantine-Morrish style. The largest synagogue in Europe was built in the middle of the19th century. In its museum one can find a unique Jewish culture-related collection from the roman culture to the 20th century.

Interesting fact about the city
The highest point of the city is the János hill, 527m high. The population is more than 1.8 million. It has 23 districts, with 194 formally named parts. Because of Budapest centre role in Hungary the main roads start from Budapest in radial direction and their distance is measured from the Zero Kilometer Stone at Adam Clark Square (except road 8).The main railways start from Budapest as well. The first underground line of the European Continent was completed in 1896 in Budapest (Millennium Underground, M1) between Vörösmarty Square and Heroes' Square, and more stations were added later.  At the stations, exhibitions shows the history of the line and Budapest's most important periods. Budapest received official recognition for its thermal and medicinal waters as early as 1934. Several hot and mineral springs come from the sides of the Buda hills. Besides the Turkish baths, which were built on the hot springs in the 19th century the Széchényi, the Gellért, the Lukács and the Rác Bath which currently closed for renovations are all famous for their healing powers. The cave beneath the Várhegy in Buda (16 Országház Street) is a highly protected sinter development. Out of the 10 km long cave system, 1.5 can be visited.
